At the 2022 Soul Train Awards, Xscape will be given the Lady of Soul Award. The legendary R&B group is made up of Kandi Burruss-Tucker, LaTocha Scott, Tamika Scott, and Tameka “Tiny” Harris.
This award has been given to two other groups before it went to Xscape. At the 2017 Soul Train Awards, SWV was given an award.
Jill Scott, Brandy, Faith Evans, Yolanda Adams, Monica, and Ashanti are just some of the artists who have won the Lady of Soul Award in the past.
Soul Train is so important to all of us that we’re happy to be given the “Lady of Soul” Award this year. In a joint statement, Xscape said, “It’s going to be a great night, and we can’t wait to see you all there.”
“One of the most famous R&B supergroups of all time is Xscape. Their powerful vocal harmonies paved the way for R&B in the ’90s and for some of the biggest hits of today. Their sound is definitely one of a kind and expertly done. Connie Orlando, EVP of Specials, Music Programming, and Music Strategy, said, “We’re excited to honor all of these talented artists on R&B’s biggest stage, the Soul Train Awards.”
The first album, “Hummin’ Comin’ at Cha,” Xscape’s first album, which came out in 1993, was a big reason why they became famous.
The album, which sold a million copies, debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 24 the week of October 30, 1993. It was No. 17 in the issue dated November 20, 1993. “Just Kickin’ It” and “Understanding,” the first two singles from the album, both reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Just Kickin’ It” reaching No. 2.
Both songs reached the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at number one (then known as the Hot R&B Singles chart).
The next platinum album by Xscape was 1995’s Off the Hook, which included “Who Can I Run To,” their third top ten Hot 100 single (No. 8). In the fall of 1995, it stayed at the top of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for six weeks.
With their third album, Traces of My Lipstick, which came out in 1998, they had another Hot 100 top ten songs called “The Arms of the One Who Loves You.” The RIAA also said it was a platinum record.
Xscape to Receive Lady of Soul Award
In 1999, Xscape ended the decade with the top ten singles on the Billboard Adult R&B Airplay chart for a female R&B group, with four. These things are part of the group:
- “Where Can I Go?” — No. 2
- “Understanding” No. 3
- : “Just Kickin’ It”; No. 4:
- “Am I Dreaming” by Ol Skool and Keith Sweat; No. 6:
- “I’m Gonna Make It”
After going their separate ways for a few years to do their own things, Kandi and Tiny won a Grammy and topped several Billboard charts for their work on “No Scrubs” by TLC.
Kandi also wrote the song “Bill, Bills, Bills” by Destiny’s Child. It was the second song she had written to top the Hot 100 in 1999, after the TLC song “Girl Power.”
Kandi, LaTocha, and Tamika all have music out on their own. “Used to Love Me,” which was made with help from Todrick Hall and Precious, came out in 2020. She just put out a song called “It’s You,” which features the late Gerald Levert.
LaTocha’s last piece of solo music was “Full-Time Love,” which came out in April 2021. It was inspired by gospel music.
In 2019, her sister Tamika came out with an EP called “Family Affair.” This summer, it came out again and was remastered.
Besides their solo music, Kandi and Tiny worked together this year to make a response record to “If I Get Caught,” a controversial song by dvsn. The R&B duo’s fourth album, Working On My Karma, has the song on it.
In 2018, Xscape changed its name for a short time to XSCAP3 and put out an EP called “Here for It” that had the hit single “Memory Lane” on it. Kandi wasn’t in the group.
Since then, Xscape has gone back to its original name and performed on several big stages together, including the Essence Festival of Culture and, most recently, Mary J. Blige’s Strength of a Woman Festival & Summit.
This fall, Xscape will be part of the R&B Music Experience Tour, which is a series of concerts. Monica, Tevin Campbell, Tamar Braxton, 112, and other R&B veterans are also set to perform.
Soon, Bravo will show the first episode of a new TV show that features SWV. The unscripted show, which is called XSCAPE/SWV for now, will be run by Mona Scott’s company, Young’s Monami Productions. It will air on the network this winter.
Back to the 2022 Soul Train Awards, Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé each have seven nominations, which is the most of anyone. Some of the nominees are Ari Lennox, Chris Brown, Silk Sonic, Muni Long, Maxwell, Chaka Khan, and others. The 2022 Soul Train Awards will be shown on BET and BET Her on Sunday, November 27, at 8 p.m. ET. Deon Cole, a comedian, and actor will host.
