Hogwarts and Greatest Wizards of Wizarding world

H

The wizarding world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts has left its indelible mark on young and old. The world is expansive enough to warrant a lifetime of exploration with its labyrinths, secret societies, and secret magical practices. There are hundreds of characters like Voldemort and Dumbledore that you know by name alone; a vast history full of intrigue and mystery. If you love finding out more about this extraordinary world than just reading the books themselves, there are plenty of resources available online for you to explore.

Hogwarts

Hogwarts is the most renowned school of magic in the wizarding world. First mentioned in 1958, the school remained a hidden entity until 1992, when Harry Potter first arrived there on his eleventh birthday. Since then, fans and readers have been able to read a little about one of the most mysterious places in the universe.

The real Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was founded around 990 A.D., making it over one thousand years old! However, there are no records of it having been an actual working school until around 900 years later. In 1933, it had only one headmaster: Ragnock Bletchley. Bletchley was the headmaster until 1979, and Professor Dilys Derwent succeeded him. It is unknown when the school started to be used for education.

The school has four headmasters or Headmistresses: Phineas Nigellus Black, Anatoly Maximillian Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, Armando Dippet, and Ragnock Bletchley. The latter two are known only by name.

Founders of Hogwarts

Hogwarts was founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. There is no mention of their names in the original founding document; instead, a list of students’ names is given. However, there is speculation that these founders have initially been a student at Hogwart’s before founding their school for witches and wizards.

Other Wizarding schools
Hogwarts is the only known school of magic in the wizarding world. We know very little about the other schools that existed before Hogwarts was founded. Even after it was founded, there were only two other schools: Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Durmstrang Institute. While Durmstrang is on the complete opposite side of the ideological scale as Hogwarts, both are very prestigious institutes of magic.

Greatest Wizards of Wizarding world

When we talk about the greatest wizards of all time, we must first define the word “greatest” in our context. To most, being the greatest wizard would mean to be one of the most powerful or one of the most gifted at magic. However, in this case, we define greatness by the number of awards and accolades a wizard receives. The following is a list of some of those who were considered to be among the greatest:

Godric Gryffindor – One of only four known founders of Hogwarts.

Helga Hufflepuff – One of only four known founders of Hogwarts.

Rowena Ravenclaw – One of only four known founders of Hogwarts.

Salazar Slytherin – One of only four known founders of Hogwarts.

Albus Dumbledore – Headmaster and creator of the famous Sorting Hat. Perhaps one of the most influential people in the history of the Harry Potter series.

Sirius Black – Father of Harry Potter. James Potter – Father of Harry Potter. Lily Evans – Mother of Harry Potter.

Those who are in every way superior to the rest

There is a web of spells and enchantments that surround Hogwarts. Those who always stood out from the crowd and those who always had a unique way of doing things are usually considered the greatest. Here is a list of some great witches and wizards:

Gellert Grindelwald – Fantastic wizard who was at one time considered the most incredible dark wizard in all history. He was an arch-enemy to Albus Dumbledore until Dumbledore defeated him and imprisoned him in his prison for life. The power seemed to have been used for the good at first, but it all went wrong in the end.
Filius Flitwick – Deputy Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is one of the most outstanding Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers in history.

Rubeus Hagrid – The gamekeeper at Hogwarts. He is one of the essential characters in the Harry Potter series, and he played a huge role in defeating Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall.

Ministry of Magic

There are a large number of people that work in the Ministry of Magic. Most of these people are bureaucrats who have little to no actual power, and a lot of them have no idea what they do or who they are working for. However, some know better.

The most prominent officials in the Ministry of Magic are:

Minister for Magic – The head of the entire ministry is tasked with upholding and enforcing all kinds of magical laws. He is one of the highest-ranking government officials in the whole wizarding world. There have only been three ministers for magic:

Cornelius Fudge – Minister for Magic from 1990-1996. Kingsley Shacklebolt – Minister for Magic from 1997 until his death at the Battle of Hogwarts. He was killed by Voldemort, but not before killing many Death Eaters himself, including Bellatrix Lestrange.

Riches of Gringotts

Gringotts Wizarding Bank is the only remaining bank in Great Britain, and possibly even in the entire wizarding world. It is located in Diagon Alley, and there is at least one branch in London. The bank has been in operation for over 1000 years, and it’s reputed to be impregnable.

Gringotts guards its clients’ valuables with dragons that live underground. There are more than a thousand of them living there, making a trip to Gringotts quite interesting. Gringotts also has an underground network of vaults used to hold treasures of wizards and witches from all over the world.

Conclusion

That concludes our list of the magical creatures, spells, and strange places that you may encounter during your stay at Hogwarts. Even though some of these are considered legendary, they have been given quite a lot of credit over the years. Each of them has played a significant role in literature and history, whether it was intentional or not.
