Blackjack: Where it all began

B

Many historians believe that Blackjack first originated in France around 1700, but games on NonGamstopCasinos.net for Brits with similar concepts could be found in other countries around Europe – like Spain. Despite this, 16th century France saw the early versions of a game named Vingt-et-Un, which is a direct translation of Twenty-One.

In the modern-day, Blackjack has evolved to cater to ever-changing technological advancements. You can now play live Blackjack online, or try your chances at land-based venues in many places around the world.

With this in mind, join us as we delve back in time to witness the evolution of Blackjack…

The earliest games

It is said that Vingt-et-Un was derived from other popular casino games at the time, such as Chemin de Fer, and was played frequently amongst royalty in the French Courts. The game then became even more beloved as it shuffled into the following century – when French colonists took Vingt-et-Un overseas and onto North American shores.

Vingt-et-Un in America

In 1820, Vingt-et-Un could be found in the first legalised gambling halls of New Orleans, where the tale of skilled dealer Eleanor Dumont begins.

Dumont made a name for herself whilst travelling around the States as a rare, female Blackjack dealer, until she opened a gambling hall in Nevada City, California. Her establishment was aptly named Vingt-et-Un, and she would see people flocking from all over the country just to play with her.

Becoming Blackjack

Eleanor Dumont helped the popularity of Blackjack to evolve, but the game itself didn’t actually gain this familiar name until the 20th century. In Nevada, the game was still widely known as Twenty-One, but the popular Las Vegas casinos needed a new way to promote the game.

They did this by introducing a bonus payout for anyone who won with a black Jack (Spades or Clubs) and the Ace of Spades. The promotion worked, as the game became more popular, but eventually faded out. Despite this, the name Blackjack stuck.

Blackjack online

In 1996, the first online casino made its debut, and Blackjack was, unsurprisingly, one of the first games to feature.

Digital games could be played from anywhere you had internet access, thanks to a Random Number Generator (RNG). This computer software is used to create unpredictable outcomes for the games, generating a new combination of numbers or symbols every single second. The idea is that this is as close to computer-generated randomness as you can get.

As technology continued to advance and the first smartphones in the mid-2000s paved the way for greater bandwidth and better internet speeds, Live Casino gaming took to the stage.

Now, state-of-the-art HD cameras, monitors, lighting and technology all come together to create a smooth, seamless, authentic casino experience, streamed directly from a specialist studio – straight to your chosen device.

You can play Blackjack from anywhere you are, at any time you fancy, as long as you have internet access. And that’s not all! There are themed Blackjack games for you to enjoy, including; Lightning Blackjack and Multi-Hand Blackjack, for example.

With such a rich history, it’s clear that Blackjack has stood the test of time and evolved to cater to the modern-day player. But what does the future hold for the game? Only time will tell…
